Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is a seasonal field station located on 95-acre Appledore Island, dedicated to undergraduate education and research in marine science. Lying six miles offshore from the rugged Maine/New Hampshire coastline, SML is secluded, yet accessible. Only a one-hour boat ride from Portsmouth, NH, Appledore is a natural laboratory and classroom where the rocky intertidal zone, seabird colonies, and the open sea are right outside your door! Programs for the general public are included in each summer’s academic calendar. Shoals Marine Laboratory is a joint partnership between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire.
